The YMCA of Greater New York is the largest youth-serving organization in New York City, serving more than 175,000 kids and teens and 175,000 adults each year through its 20 branches and 180 sites in the five boroughs of New York City, plus three upstate camps.

The Harlem YMCA is seeking an experienced applicant who will provide direction and leadership to the Aquatics Department, and contribute to the success of the Association’s “Total Health Initiative”, and to member retention, by ensuring quality member service and member satisfaction. The Director, Aquatics, is responsible for safe pool operations, program development, implementing Membership Best Practices, building member relationships, Human Resources and facility management, strategic planning, volunteer/committee development, and budget control. The position carries out the Mission and Vision of the Y, and adheres to Y values when dealing with staff, volunteers and members.

Responsibilities:

• Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates all aquatic staff and volunteers.

• Plans, schedules, supervises and evaluates all aquatic staff and volunteers.

• Develops tracks and controls the department budget in accordance with Branch and Association Guidelines.

• Directs scheduling, maintenance, repair of Aquatics Department facilities/equipment in partnership with the Buildings Department.

• Reviews staff and member evaluations/feedback annually.

• Adheres to Association Aquatic Safety Standards and Guidelines.

• Upholds Association policies and demonstrates Y values: Respect, Responsibility, Caring and Honesty.

• Performs related duties as assigned:

o Serves on Branch Strategic Planning and Operations Management Leadership Team.

o Serves as Branch liaison to the Association’s Aquatics Cabinet

o Attends trainings & conferences in the Aquatic field

Qualifications:

• BA/BS in Physical Education, Exercise Science or related area is desired.

• Minimum 2 years experience supervising Lifeguards and managing a pool facility.

• YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and WSI (Water Safety Instructor) Certification.

• YMCA Swim Lesson or other Certification.

• CPR/AED, Oxygen Administration and First Aid certifications.

• Knowledge of safe practices and procedures as they pertain to pool operations, supervisory concepts and techniques; customer service practices and principles

• Excellent communication skills
